Academics Chairman Steve Loflin proposed the bill saying, "We need a continuity of leadership." The bill specifically states "the need for a Student Government adviser has been established, and there will be a positive balance carried into the Student Activity Fund, therefore, be it enacted that $25,110 of that balance be allocated to create a full-time advisement oosition for Student Government." The job title of the SG adviser will be Assistant Director of Student Activities for Student Government. THE CONTROVERSIAL bill passed after motions to table it and a roll call to verify a quorum failed. SG President Glenn German, in an address to the Senate prior to the vote, called an ad viser "a tremendous asset" and "an investment for effectiveness." Concerns arose among senators regarding the funding of the SG adviser's salary. SG Treasurer Connor Baker said the salary would come from unused funds allocated to student organizations for the year. These funds are normally carried over into a fall supplementary funding process and are available for allocation to student organizations. Baker said surplus funds of approximately $56,000 will be available for next ,fall, and the salary would be taken from this amount. Ray Ricchi said, "They're counting on students not spending all their allocated funds. If they (organizations) spend all of their money, where is the monev for an adviser's salarv eoine to come from? " A SIMILAR bill for a SG adviser appeared before the 1983-84 Senate allocating a $21,000 salary. However, at the time of approval, two-thirds of the Senate was not present and the bill did not go into effect. Hnance Committee Chairman lony t'rice said, "The amount of money has varied, but we're talking about a small amount for an effective Student Government. It will really pay in the lonj? run." Sen. Barry Wall, a Finance Committee member, said, "I tried to stress we need someone for continuity but the fact is we haven't looked into all of our options. I don't think it's our responsibility to pay for this salary." German said (JSC President James Holderman said he would appropriate funds for one-half of a SG adviser's salary. The Senate, however, refused the offer. Ricchi said the Senate would rather not take the money now to ensure having funds available from Holderman for later uses, including emergencies. "MY QUESTION is this: how can Student Government afford to pay for an adviser when many student organizations are not fully funded and free films are being cancelled?
