He was already a pilot so he jumped at the chance, arranged for a sabbatical from USC and spent 14 weeks getting the same introductory academic, physical and flight training all naval fighter pilots receive. After successfully completing the training, he returned to USC with a stronger background in technology as well as proof for NASA that he is preparing for space flight.
