Sarajevo, which last made headlines by triggering World War I, lies in the center of Yugoslavia in the Dinaric Alps. Steeped in more than 4,000 years of recorded history, Sarajevo is a multi-ethnic city noted for the absence of conflict among its diverse populace. The people here are genuinely friendly to \\f ortomnrc in/l t;nr\; piiri aiic o V"\/alit A moripo tt v,,jivi 11vi >; auu vvi y V/lai iuuo ai/uui nLiuv,i lva (and Michael Jackson), but their primary attributes are boundless enthusiasm and a singular flavor for turning this unlikely Olympic site into a winter extravaganza. In learning to deal with Yugoslavia on a daily basis, I am reminded in some ways, oddly enough, of South Carolina. For the people here, life is never hurried, even in preparation for the Olympics. Even though Yugoslavia is a Communist country, it did not really feel as though we were behind the Iron Curtain. i SOFT CON I Soft Lenses | Exam | Follow-up I Disinfection a O /"v k-\ Innooo f rvK Ao + i/^n u - vui 11doi iciiouo i ui r-voiiyn | Wear, and Farsightednes | CAROLINA UD I Dr. Danny A. "Nema nrohleni," they are constantly assuring us ? "No problem." That is, in fact, their answer to most any setback. Whatever the problem, they are confident they will find a solution. It took six years ot planning ana construction to put together what Sarajevo hoped would be the finest Winter Olympics ever. They had little more than mountains and snow when they were awarded the '84 Games in 1978, and in addition to battling with the delicate demands of international sporting events, Sarajevo has had to deal with an image problem. They are the first East European country to ever play host to a Winter Olympics, and many believed they wouldn't be able to pull it off. But this attitude did not deter the Yugoslavs. The people have a tremendous capability for muddling through ? or over ? the obstacles that organizing an Olympics provided. tact"lensTT $99 I POWER RANGE F! -6:00 to +6:00 p natism, Bifocal, Extended |jj s higher priced. || S10N CLINIC 9 *ns.
