'Beauty Stab' ABC tries d By Liz Kennedy Every now and then a band comes along with a follow-up album that sounds like a rerun of the debut. This is not the case with 44Beautv Stab," ABC's follow-up to "The Lcxicon of Love." "Beauty Stab," produced by Martin Fry and the lads, sounds as if the group decided to try heavy metal while still maintaining an orchestral background. ALL 12 songs, including the ballads, do not have the danrenhlp hf?at vr?n ma*/ come to enjoy or dislike in "The Look of Love" or "Poison Arrow." Instead, the rhythm of the songs on "Beauty Stab" rely heavily on guitar antics and synthesizer/piano maneuvering. "Beauty Stab" opens with a catchy tune, "That Was Then, But This Is Now." The tune is upbeat and fast, and Fry sounds pleasant and excited throughout the song, and manager iu Keep inc souna ngni. l ne song ends abruptly, taking listeners by surprise. The second track, "Love's A Dangerous Language," bursts on with a long guitar screech that can be annoying, but may be the highlight of the song. The more promising songs on 44 Beautv Stab." are on side two. Even though Fry stands out most of the time, Singleton and White manage to get a few words in. The most obvious place is on a tune called "UnZip," where they keep up with Fry on the chorus. The song has a good beat and a steady, fast pace that contains heavy piano chords that make the song. The lyrics are quite sensuous and tie in well with the music: Lips that seem so kissable, Unpermissible, Unzippable Irresistible So Kiss me Irresistible Miss Me, Miserably Unhappy. The next track, "S.O.S.," has an attractive, synthesized mood. "S.O.S." is one of ABC's better songs that keeps you flowing like a ship on a calin sea. The next and final song on "Beauty & Stab," is a soft tune called "United Kingdom" with only voice and piano at the h helm. "United Kingdom" is a mild protest fj song that can go either way, as far as quality and lyrical writing is concerned. "Beauty Stab" is by no means equal to "The Lexicon of Love." but ABC managed }. to try a different angle in music by "rockin p out" and has succeeded partially with this j| album. So don't expect any danceable tunes from the songs mentioned and the ones not mentioned. If so, you're in for a Oil disappointment.
