The team finished the fall season with an 8-1 record, losing only to Old Grey, a local team, in the state championship finals. "We looked strong last semester," club president Neil Cory said. "We should do well again this spring, once we get back in shape," he said. "We've had a lot of problems organizing practices, though, because our regular field has been closed for repair." "Most of the players have been conditioning on their own," said senior Mark Avery. "Because the halves are each 40 minutes long, we need to be in top physical condition." "In practice, we've been doing a lot of running, and going through drills," Avery said. "Most of the starters have played together for three years, so we kind of know what to expect from each other during a game. "Because most of the older members will be leaving next year. "A lot of people may be afraid to come out because they haven't played before, but the sport isn't really that hard to pick up. It's a mixture between soccer and football." Freshman Andy Pruden said the club provides a unique experience for its members. "I think it's a uniuue club." Pruden said. "There is not heavy intersquad competition, and everybody shows respect on the field. The club is real close." The club will play its first game this weekend in Savannah, Ga. Two tournaments are scheduled for the end of April in Blacksburg, Va. and Jacksonville, Fla. "The tournaments will have good teams, but our-biggest?rival will be Old Grey," junior Drew Robb said. "They are mostly alumni and have had a lot of playing experience. It's usually a good, evenly-matched game." USC will play Old Grey March 15.
