'Terms of Endearm By Margarita Pate Movies about children dying of leukemia or spouses having deadly strokes at too early an age often lose viewers because the/ are about real situations too sad to think about. Such is the plight of "Terms of Endearment," a beautiful movie about a group of people whose lives are intimately intertwined. It's sad, but the kind of sad that makes one cry in appreciation of someone else's suffering. Shirley MacLaine playes her role with genius. The role is a bitchy woman, but the viewer doesn't seem to mind, instead feeling attracted to that aspect of her personality. MacLaine is constantly yelling and degrading her daughter, yet they lie in bed together munching and talking like two girls at a slumber party. There's a lot of love between them, but it's almost as if it's more than they can handle. She's fresh and genuine. She leads the viewer through her life from a young, recently married woman to a still young, but dying, mother of two little boys. The relationship with her husband is very unnerving. He is likable, even when one wants to hate him. He's also weak and unsatisfying, but the movie's forced emotions prevent disliking him. Jack Nicholson actually plays a sane person. He's a potbellied, drunken ex-astronaut living off the laurels of his earlier life. He was a hero, and he's finding it difficult not being what he used to be. He's a welcome interruption in Shirley MacLaine's life. Their "love affair" is brazen, yet not without its own glamour.
