SportS : z USC tries t By Andrew Miller USC's men's basketball team will try to get out of its slump tomorrow when the Gamecocks tip off against Metro conference opponent Florida State. Carolina brings a 9-6 overall record, 2-2 in the Metropolitain Collegiate Athletic Conference, into the Florida State contest. USC assistasnt coach Dave Blank Mid the key to the Gamecocks' 76-68 victory over the Seminoles on Jan. 3 was excellent outside shooting and patience ? neither of which Carolina has shown in the past five games. "WE DON'T thinks it's a confidence thing," Blank said. "Our offense is getting the open shot. It's just that were are not hitting it. "Of course we are a little worried about it, but I think that we'll get out of it." Florida State stands at 10-5 overall and 2-3 in the Metro (Florida State lost to Louisville Wednesday night, 95-71). However, this will not be the same Seminole team the tjamecocks beat faced in Tallahassee earlier this month, according to USC head coach Bill Foster. "With Tony William (who has been out with a sprained ankle) coming back into the lineup, Florida State is a different team," Foster said. "Wp think that th#?v arp ? fpam this year than they were last year." The Seminoles lost first-round draft choice Mitchell Wiggins, who, in two games against the Gamecocks the past year, scored 57 points and pulled down 17 rebounds. "The loss of Wiggins hurt them," Blank said. "But we feel that they play better team ball. Last year, they were a one-man offense, and this year everybody gets into the act. We can't key on one person like we've done in the past. "FOR THE first time this year, they finally have a true center (Alton Gipson). He and Vince Martello hurt us in the last game." Gipson scored 28 points and Martello had 15 in the game at Tallahassee. Martello scored 18 points against the Gamcocks in a 90-85 victory for the Seminoles in Carolina Coliseum the past year. Florida State head coach Joe Williams said Gipson was one of the best centers the past year in junior-college basketball. Heading into tomorrow night's game, Gipson is the second-leading scorer in the Metro with a 20.3 average, and is tied for second in blocked shots. Blank said the Gamecocks will try to mix up their defense, and play a lot of man-toman. "I think that we match up with them very well man-to-man," Blank said. "But I think we'll start in a zone and see how they shoot." DEFENSIVELY, BLANK said he expects Florida State to use a 2-3 zone to make the Gamecocks shoot from the outside. In Metro conference games. USC's Jimmv Foster is ranked first in rebounding (12.8), second in scoring (21.8), and second in fieldgoal percentage (.660). Foster needs just two points to become the ' fifth-leading scorer in Carolina basketball history. He will pass Art Whisnant, who played for USC between ^960-62, scoring 1,505 points.
