Golden Spur celebrati By Allison Stein I he uoiden spur celebrates its 10th anniversary this week with five days of special deals and activities. "The purpose of this celebration is twofold," said Mark Taylor, manager of the Golden Spur. "We want to say 'thank you' not only to the students, but to the distributors who have used the Spur as an outlet to contact the college market and help promote responsible usage of alcohol." Each day of the five-day celebration features a brand-name beer special, entertainment and a special birthday cake. Each cake will be shaped like a bottle of that day's special brand and will be displayed until the grand cake cutting at 7 each evening. "Drinking is never a primary activity at the Spur," Taylor said. "We have specials to give the students a break in their budgets." "All of the Spur employees are instructed in alcohol education, confrontation and resolution techniques," he said. Bartenders are students, and will not serve students beyond their tolerance levels. If needed, they will find students an escort home. I HELP FO( SAVE An BABIES "B1 Support irw Bh 4 (m March of Dimes I ggg I Gamecock ? Because of their careful observation, there has not been one critical incident in the Spur in the past two years, and the student staff is responsible for that record," Taylor said. j The Spur began as an experiment in the late 1960s. 5 "The students wanted a campus bar," Taylor said. "Ten- ; sions and sensitivities were on the drug culture, rather than | with alcohol. "The university was concerned with alcohol and did studies of student bars in university unions. They found them to be more educational than regular bars, if handled responsibly," said Taylor. At that time, there were only 119 student bars on American college campuses. Now there are many more. THE FIRST USC campus bar was called the Wheat Street | Club and was located in the old train station. USC dccided a campus bar could be a positive influence, and brought it to the Russell House in 1973. It was located in what was most recently the Union Station Candy Shop. ; On nnpnilio nioht I Flntt nnrl Pari srriiooc nprfnrmpfl I O ^ ?C>0^ pv. ?v/. ...vv.f and local beer distributors served as bartenders. One year later, in 1974, the Golden Spur was moved to its current location. Much talent has graced its stage since then including Steve Martin, blues artist Leon Redbone, jazz ensemble NRBQ, Marshall Chapman, the Atlanta Rhythm Section and singer Jimmy Buffett. WHAT DOES Taylor foresee in the next 10 years? "With the programming and advances we've made, it will continue to be very important to have a student bar, especially for the younger students. Sometimes, students initially away from the family situation need a place to go that cares about the individual and promotes the responsible usage of alcohol," he said. Taylor has a firm opinion about the proposed legislation to raise the legal drinking age in the state. "It is impossible to legislate maturity. Many people who are 18 years old are more mature than some people ever will be at 45 vears. Education is the answer ? not nrohibition. "I hope more places will see the importance of this kind of goal and understand we have a right and, especially, a need to exist."
