"We had an excellent year; we came out ahead by about $12,000 except for one committee," German said. "The deficit was caused by one event of one committee; it was done by people no longer here." The extra $12,000 was used to pay part of the deficit, he said. The rest came out of the $151,191 allocated to CPU from student activities fees this year. That event was the Cultural Series presentation of Lana Turner in "Murder Among Friends," said Mark Erickson, assistant dean of student affairs. He said "Evita" contriKnto/1 fKq r\^fl<-*! llli/UlVU IV/ 111V UVllWli C*I 3U. "The major portion of the deficit was from the Cultural Series," he said. "'Murder Among Friends' and 'Evita' earned an amount substantially less than needed." "Murder Among Friends" was scheduled to run four nights, but only ran two and didn't sell out those two performances, creating the deficit. The Union receives about $150,000 from the Senate Finance Committee of Student Government, German said. That amount is divided among the nine CPU committees and the executive council. Since the Union's yearly budget averages around $500,000, most of its funds are generated in revenues, German said. "Last semester we had just started on new Metallic make-up. "(The committee involved) didn't overspend, it just didn't generate enough revenue." German said the union found out about the $50,000 deficit at the close of the last fiscal year. "The problem was handled by the Union as a whole," he said. As a result, the entire Union has become budget conscious, and each committee now suomns weekly ouaget reports, tierman said.
