Marshal posing as reporter angers Athens' publishers ATHENS, Ga. (AP) ? Publishers of Athens' daily, weekly and student newspapers are demanding a Justice Department Investigation of federal marshal who posed as a news reporter to gain information. r* i i i n _1 a /^I 1 ~ r A * ruonsners is.uucri ^Iiiimuci ;> UI uic rvmciib iimiuciHerald and Daily News, Pete McCommons of the Athens , Observer and Charles Russell of the Red and Black, the University of Georgia student newspaper, sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General William French Smith on Wednesday, condeming the marshal's actions in Athens Oct. 14. The marshal was seeking to identify a potential nuclear protester, said Mike Brown, chief deputy at the U.S. marshal's office in Columbia, S.C. A spokesman for the U.S. Marshal Service in Washington said it was the first time anyone had questioned the actions of federal marshals in such a situation. <4I KNOW of no inquiries like this before," said spokesman Bill Dempsey. "That's about all I can say about it except that what they (marshals) did was perfectly legal." The federal marshal indentified himself as a Greenville, S.C. reporter to Jill Morris at the Athens Progressive Resource Center on Oct. 14, Morris said. The marshal inquired about her plans for participation in an anti-nuclear rally at the Savannah River Plant, she said. After she confirmed her plans, another marshal, with the assistance of police, served her a summons to appear at an injunction hearing the next day in Columbia. The injunction was issued Oct. 15 but later stayed.
