USC's women': Rv .Inff Rnnnrs ? , WW,. ..wgw. w USC's head women's golf coach Donna Noonan had hoped for a top-10 finish in the Lady Tarheel Invitational last weekend, and her team came through, placing seventh in the tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C. The University of Kentucky won the tournament by shooting a 302-310 ? 612. Only 36 holes were played in the tournament because of inclement weather. South Florida placed second with a score of 618, followed by North Carolina, 628; Ohio State, 630; Duke, 632; and Georgia, 633. The Lady Gamecocks followed the Lady Bulldogs with a 322-315 ? 637. INDIVIDUALLY, LISA Russell led the team with a 154, good for eighth place in the field. Freshman Sandy Persinger finished four shots behind Russell with a 158. Sophomore Kelly Brannon finished third for the team with a 162,, followed by senior Robin Abare and freshman Gaylynn Pohlman with scores of 164 and 180, respectively. Noonan said the weather conditions "made it rough" for the team but "the course remained in good shape and held the water well." "The quality of the field was much better for this tournament," she said. "Most of the teams there will be at the nationals." NOONAN ALSO said finishing seventh in the tournament was a "respectable finish." l I thanks ^ United Way use H M Y . M A -Li 1 l ? M A (5 I I JNIICrH 1 Ii 7:00 pm 3 WIN AND Th ? "We had a lot of question marks going in." "Seventh place wasn't bad. We only finished nine shots out of third place," she said. Noonan's team has placed better than 12th in all of its tournaments this fall, finishing 12th in the Lady Seminole in Talahassee, Fla.; fifth in the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.; fourth in the Lady Kat in Lexington, Ky.; and the seventh-place finish in the Lady Tarheel. According to Noonan, the Lady jamecocks' goal tor these two tournaments will be the same as its goal for :he Lady Tarheel. "THE ALABAMA Invitational will be about equal (in difficulty to the Lady Tarheei)," she said. "Pat Bradley will have a strong field of top-20 teams, and it's the big tournament for the fall. Our goal will be to finish in the top 10 in the next two tournaments." Noonan also said she doesn't expect to have any changes in the team that will play in the remaining tournaments. "I'd expect to take out the same team, but you never know," she said. Brannon also has a chance at participating in next spring's National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, according to Noonan. "KELLY HAS a good chance at gaining an at-large bid," she said. "They (the NCAA) only take 10 atlarge bids, so they would only take one player from a school." "We have an outside shot as a team," Noonan said. "Sandy (Persinger) has also been playing really well in her first year. She's averaging a 78 (strokes per round)." The Lady Gamecocks have two tournaments left in the fall season.
