mm mannanan iras 'rich'music on By Maria Baens Envision a batallion of characters kicking up their heels for recognition. Add a multitude of talent, glittering and generous. Cross their fingers, and take a bow. Welcome to Manhattan Transfer. Now meet the "Bodies and Souls," the latest album from Janis Siegel, Cheryl Bentyne, Tim Hauser and Alan Paul. A crisp salad of 1950s bebop, rhythm and blues, jazz and modern synthesizer sound is blended on "Bodies and Souls." Once more, the quartet displays the same rich blend of fancy instrumental backup and striking voices. The voices range from Siegel's shrill notes to Tim Hauser's affec ting tenor. DON'T FORGET to give a nod of approval to Frankie Valli's contribution of his historical falsetto to "American Pop," a song with forgettable lyrics but with a danceable tune. Ernie Watts' plays a favorable alto sax solo for Rod Temperton's sweet \ "Mystery," a romantic ballad with { unabashed sentiment. It's a beguiling fast rhythm: "Tonight let's taste the spice of life/Keep it sweet until the mornin' light." "Code of Ethics," dedicated especially to the Olympic athletes, has lyrics by Alan Paul and music co-written by Randy Waldman. It has a goose-bump-raising prelude and an eerie chorus. ENERGY IS derived from synthesizer sound as visions of flexing muscles and cheering crowds in slow motion come to mind. "Malaisie en Malaisie" is sheer magic, the English lyrics are by Paul, and the French lyrics are by Serge Gainsbourg. Hauser gives a subdued but heartrending rendition sparked up by Paul's tingling high pitch. ALSO, ONE might look for the highspirited satire of biting songs like "(Wanted) Dead or Alive" and "Spies in the Night." Still, "Bodies and Souls" is a joyous trip. It is an invigorating display of Manhattan Transfer's continued effort to explore its abundant resources of people nnH miicir The band still plays with new sounds as well as old to arrive at a unique blend of nostalgia and innovation. The sleeves aren't long enough, the neckline is wrong, the shoulders aren't padded enough. So I took all of my sweaters and revised them the way I'd want them to be." SHE SMILES a smile Lhat seems to devour her entire face. It is her facial pride, illuminating her almond shaped blue eyes, full, sensual lips and adoring dimples.
