Debate club resol By Laura Dannhardt Heated arguments characterized the Athenian Literary and Debate Society's contest on the American peacekeeping force in Lebanon Wednesday. Athenian member Thomas Nyzio's brief history of the Lebanon situation and arguments questioning the validity of the U.S. Marines' presence opened the evening's debate. The new Lebanese government was the creation of an Isareli invasion and should remain the sole responsibility of the Isrealis. He also contended it is the United States' duty to preserve peace, respond to the needs of other democratic governments and protect U.S. security on a global level. Rebuttals presented by both sides showed differing views on the War Powers Act, the expense to the United States as a result of the 'peacekeeping force,' the validity of U.S. global interests and the shaky foundation of the present Lebanese government. Athenian moderator Jack Hamilton spoke against the resolution that the United States would lose oil interests if troops are withdrawn. Hamilton also added the United States should defend a growing Lebanese democracy. David Wiles questioned the justification of the U.S. presence on basic concepts of principle. He suggested careful evaluation of the cost in terms of money, lives and reputation. Immediately following closing summations by Nyzio and Avery the concluding vote was cast in favor of the resolution tn rpmnvc fhp U.S. Marines. EYEST^ .fumble N <=? c?
