Hnmpdian iimnl By Kelley Braithwaito Curious observers and full-fledged fans filled the Russe House Ballroom Friday in anticipation of the phenomenall funny Michael Davis, the featured attraction at the All-Niter "A comic says funny things, and a comedian says thing funny, which makes me a juggler," Davis said. Davis, a comedian and juggler whose comedy originated ir his home state of California, has progressed from San Fran cisco street shows to television and stage. HF HAS annparpH nn "SntiirHnv Niaht I ivp" fivp fimp*; 4 The David Lctterman Show," "20/20," and "Dick Cavet Show." He has two Broadway musicals under his belt alonj with performances at countless clubs, colleges anc conventions. "Onsta you get a lot more out of a performer thai anywhere ..sc," he said. This theory seems to be true, as Davis' soft-spoken, behind curtain personality turns to tire as he takes the stage, prompted by thunderous applause from the audience. The slight, diminutive, not-quite-so-funny-looking man need utter only one word and his comical abilities are confirmed. Low-key on stage, Davis' spontaneous humor seems to come from nowhere. He is a casually hysterical performer who, almost accidentally, sends his audience into incurable gales of laughter with even the slightest change of facial expression. THE COMEDY of Michael Davis varies greatly, ranging from the traditional Polish jokes to a juggling stunt involving an eyy. a bowline ball arid an annle that he munches on bet ween tosses. Davis ingeniously incorporates audience particiaption int< his performance. Anyone familiar with Davis, however, knows his specialty i: juggling, and in this area he certainly proved much more thai proficient. Davis started out slowly, juggling one ball that increased tc three, to five and eventually to nine. To add variety to this traditional trick, he demonstrated macho juggling, homosexual juggling, masochistic juggling and schizophrenic juggling, all with appropriate hand/ball maneuvers. SOON TIRED of regular juggling, Davis turned to moutl juggling, an original stunt where three pingpong balls are jug gled with the mouth. Davis' stunts were carried along by ? continuous stream of "off-the-wall" humor. Original songs kept the show moving, as well as sending th audience into hysterics. One such song is entitled "I'm in Lov with a Nymphomaniac." Another tells the story of a cowbo with hemorrhoids. As a finale, Davis performed his most amazing feat ? th juggling of an ax, cleaver and butcher knife. The audience' delight was tinged with terror as the blades were juggled close and closer to the edge of the stage. After a standing ovation and an encore, Davis retreate backstage, where he quieted down a bit. To the eager ears c curious fans gathered backstage, Michael Davis revealed hi serious side: "When I'm off-stage, I just do regular thing; Doing things like the laundry or the dishes keeps you in touc with life. You can be on the stage forever, but you have t keep in touch with life." Photo by Kevin Hvndwton All-Niter.
