* Spidermen ROTC students take By Kym Kevesdy ^7"TT" The atmosphere was calm as each cadet awaited his or her turn to rappel off a 60-foot tower during the Army ROTC exercise Thursday at thfe fire feaHMjte station on Senate and Park streets. Instructions were shouted out by senior ROTC members, who aided the i iMMk participants and demonstrated the correct procedures of the exersise. "I was very nervous because I'm afraid of heights, but once I was climbing down I was fine," junior ROTC member Rosemary Michels said. The purpose of the exercise is to ^ <H build self-confidence, overcome the fear of heights and teach basic techniques in military rescue operations, according to operation Sgt. Mark Hood. Junior ROTC members were re- | quired to participate in the exercise, onH minv frpctiman qnH cnnhnmnrp .. members joined in. Rappelling consists of climbing down walls by means of a rope, under \ one thigh and across the body over the opposite shoulder, looking like 'spider-man' to the spectators, and <**; 'V ^ falling into a trampoline-like net. Three spotters assisted rappelers as they made their approach to the net. No one fell. . %p "I wasn't nervous because my father Jjg J is a mountain climber, and I'm ac- % customed to this," said Kathy Gaskin, a junior ROTC member. The rappelling exercise, held twice yearly, has been in existence at USC for three years and was initiated by a * former operations sergeant. Hood said a proposal to build a rappelling tower behind the Blatt Physical * Education Center has been initiated, but no plans formally have been accepted.
