Although USC volleyball coach Elaine
Mozingo said her squad was nervous about
its season opener, Carolina defeated Duke
and Appalachian State universities to post a
2-0 record Saturday.
The Lady Gamecocks downed both
schools 3-0 in separate best-of-five matches
at the Blatt Physical Education Center.
"I think we felt the pressure," Mozingo
said after the Duke match. "I didn't feel like
we were loose and playing like we normally
did in practice. Our biggest problem was we
were tight.
"IT WAS our first match, and
everybody's been talking about it, saying
we're going to have a winning program this
n
year.
Carolina jumped out quickly against
Duke, taking the first game 15-7. Junior

service points to win 15-6.
The Lady Gamecocks then downed the
Lady Blue Devils 15-7 in the third game to
post their first victory of the 1983 season.
"I was really pleased with the serving,"
Mozingo said. "Teri is unreal. Usually, when
you have a player who serves that hard, she
serves four and messes up. But not Teri."
MC. NGO SAID the squad overcame the
pressure in its later match against Appalachian
State.
"We played better (against ASU) than we
did against Duke. Duke was the first match,
and we had all the new players playing
together tor the tirst time. 1 m really pleased
with them because this early they're playing
, about where they should be."

USC's win over the Mountaineers.
Carolina took the first game 15-5 on nine
straight serves by senior middle blocker Sue
Little. Freshman middle blocker Lori Rowe
led the Gamecocks with several point-scoring
spikes to take the second game 15-8.
Carolina then completed the three game
sweep, overpowering the Mountaineers 15-4.
"I'M REALLY excited about the victories,"
Rowe said. "Earlier (against Duke),
we were nervous, and we really didn't play
up to par. But tonight, I thought we did a
good job. We did what we were supposed to
do and lived up to our potential.
"I also think we're going to get better as
the season progresses.
USC travels to North Carolina State
University this weekend to participate in the
N.C. State tournament.
Rowe said the competition will be tough,

but added. "We'll eo in there with a positive I
attitude. We'll be positive, but not
overconfident."
MOZINGO CONCURRED with Rowe.
"We'll be more confident now with a 2-0
record, but we're going to have a lot more
competition," she said. "It's going to be
tough, and if we're going to beat them, we 11
have to play good ball.
"It's a very important tournament and
every match there is a challenge. We're in the
pool with N.C. State, James Madison i
University, Miami Dade ? who's always
strong ? and East Tennessee State.
"If we come out of there as winners, then I
I'll really be pleased because it's always a I
good tournament."
