Former USC All-Am By Dennis Switzer Add another former USC athlete to the professional ranks. No, it's not a football player getting a shot in the USFL or NFL, or a baseball player breaking in with a minor league team. Laura Bernstein, No. l seea lor tne women s tennis team as a freshman and sophomore, turned professional this summer, because she needed to concentrate solely on tennis, she said. "IT'S HARD to play just tennis with classes and other distractions,"she said. "I felt I needed to concentrate and put all my efforts into just playing tennis. I can improve by concentrating just on tennis." She said she made the decision to turn professional last year during Christmas break. Although she would not reveal how much money she has earned from tennis, she said she has won more than her expenses in every tournament. "I'M MAKING money," she said. Bernstein is sponsored by Wilson tennis rackets and Adidas for her clothes and shoes, but might switch to Converse, she said. The only expenses a professional faces arc food, housing and airfare, she said. She does not have a coach, but is looking for one. "I'm glad I turrned pro. "It depends on how good I do. Tennis can open a lot of doors to other jobs. "I HAVE a lot of confidence in myself," she said, but added, "my style of play has a lot of room for improvement." She characterized her stvle of play as hard ground shots with a big serve. Bernstein said she thought about turning professional right out of high school, but she sprained an ankle. "I could have turned pro out of high school. I was doing well and beating a lot of people," she said. "BUT I don't know if I would have been prepared mentally." Bernstein said although she hasn't faced any of the top women's tennis players as a professional, she has faced many of them in the junior circuit. "A lot of girls in the top 30 are my age. I'm playing in the same tournaments they are. It's just the luck of the draw," she said, adding that Pam Shriver is a good friend of hers. "I'm glad I got to experience college.
