Police arrest lawmaker
ANDERSON (AP) ? Former state Rep. William
Clinkscales and another man have been charged with con
spiring to kill three investigators who helped prosecute the
ex-lawmaker for photographing naked children.
The State Law Enforcement Division wrapped up a oneweek
investigation Monday by arresting Clinkscales and
Robert Carl Prince, 46, of Ware Shoals on charges of con
nig ivj wiiiiiiii ihuiuci <11111 oiacKmau.
Both were being held at the Anderson County Jail yesterday,
according to Sheriff's Deputy Buddy Gentry.
Solicitor George Ducworth said Monday thai Clinkscales
and Prince allegedly threatened the lives of sheriff's detectives
Bob Poole and Jimmy Callaham, solicitor's investigator
Danny Durham and the officers' families.
Clinkscales and Prince allegedly conspired to murder
Poole, Durham and Callaham to 4<punish" them for their
roles in Clinkscales' arrest and conviction on charges of
contributing to the delinquency of a minor, the Anderson
Independent-Mail auoted nnnampH anthnn'tipc qc
Ducworth said the threats were never actually communicated
to the three men.
Clinkscales and Prince are also charged with conspiring
to blackmail Poole by "photographing him having a sexual
encounter in a staged or setup situation," acccording to the
arrest warrant. The allegedly planned incident did not take
place, Ducworth said.
The purpose of the blackmail plot was allegedly to win
Poole's support in obtaining a new trial for Clinkscales and
possibly a reduced sentence or parole, according to the
warrant.

HEMINGWAY (AP) ? Residents
of this town of 5,000, angry about
plans to bus 300 black students from a

have initiated plans to secede from

The residents say they want adjacent

down our school system," said
Rufus Lawrimore, chairman of the

The final blow to Hemingway,
however, was two months ago when
the Williamsburg County School

the school's 300 students to Hemingway

The step would double the number
of students at the Hemingway school
this fall.
"We have tried all these years to
maintain a good school system,"
Lawrimore said. "I'm not against in

'WE'RE BITTERLY opposed to
their bringing these children into Hemingway.
We don't even have room for
them. They're planning on putting little
dinky out-buildings behind our
school for classrooms," he said.
