By Sammy Fretwell "It's the kind of thing where you leave a little bit sad, but opportunity is knocking," said Eric Stein of his impending employment at Princeton University. Stein, who has been USC's intramurals director since 1979, leaves a program he helped double in size to become an associate athletic director in charge of both intramurals and the physical education department at the Ivy League school. And in leaving, Stein said he's doing so with a good feeling. "IT'S BEEN a great four years," he said. "When I came here, my goal was to develop a comprehensive program, to provide something for eVeryone ? not just for the jock or the athlete, but for the average student. Hopefully, we've been 1-1- ^ *1 A >1 aoie uu mm. Under Stein, the number of specific programs offered has increased from 56 to 108 and major programs has increased from three to seven. Particularly, Stein has iccessfully tried to "pgrade the university's co-rec program "The co-rec area has now become one of the biggest parts of our program," Stein said. "Co-rec volleyball and softball and some of thesfe kind of activities has really taken off. "UNTIL RECENTLY these sports didn't really exist in a structured way because there were no rules as to how many women had to play. On some teams, you might find three i?/r*rr?*?r? and nthpr tonmc mioht havp all men" The introduction of women's flag football and women's golf are also examples of the positive change in the intramural Gamecock pitcher Clall Dnnnr4c rium oia11 nupui ig Former Gamecock relief pitcher Mike Werner signed with the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, becoming the second USC player from the 1983 team to sign a professional contract. Werner, a 21st-round draft pick from Dunedin, Fla., joins fellow moundsman Gary Parmenter who signed with the Chicago Cubs last week. Werner, who finished the season with a 7-0 record, a 2.22 earned run average and five saves has been assigned to the Blue Jays' Medicine Hat farm team of the Pioneer League. Parmenter, of Bennington, Vt., opted to pass up his fina season of eligibility and has been assigned to Salinas of th< California League. Although Stein said he is happy with the success in the past four years at Carolina's intramural department, he believes his decision to move on was a natural one, and might help to open other avenues for him in the future. "MOVING UP to this position might be a nice way to explore the (intercollegiate) athletic side of sports," he said. "I think it's going to be nice to work under their athletic department. "Though my areas will still be primarily on the intramural side, certainly I'll be in on other questions that might come up that will be more along the athletic line. Stein, 30, added that because Princeton doesn't give srhnlarshins to anv varsitv athletes, the New Jersev school has a different approach toward intramural and intercollegiate athletics. "Being at a school like Princeton, the university is very concerned about everybody on campus in an athletic as well as academic way," he said. "IT'S AMAZING.
