Classics, corned By Johnny Boggs One of the all-time crime classics and two Alfred Hitchcock favorites highlight the Carolina Program Union's summer film series. John Huston's version of "The Maltese Falcon" (1941) features Humphrey Bogart as Dashiell Hammett's cynical private investigator Sam Spade, who becomes involved in the search for the priceless bird while investigating the murder of his partner. Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Ward Bond provide top-notch supporting roles in. this grit ty mystery that is truly "the stuff that dreams are made of." HITCHCOCK'S GENIUS is exemplified in "North By Northwest" (1959) and "Psycho" (1960), the sequel to the latter playing nationwide this summer. "North By Northwest" provides non-stop entertainment with Gary Grant being mistaken for a spy by James Mason's suave villain. The film is noted for its crop-dusting scene and climax on Mount Rushmore. Anthony Perkins portrays Norman Bates in "Psycho," but is overshadowed by a bizarre musical score, wild camera angles and superb dialogue. Janet Leigh's shower scene and a chilling climax are enough to ruffle the feathers of even the most hardened horror-film viewer. -I Iclo ARMS PWABMAtY.LA ' ^3 PHONt 709 IS96 J M All Cl SjWHR ft PtNDUTCHlli. Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" (1975) is a parody of the horror genre with Gene Wilder as the grandson of the mad scientist. The late Marty Feldman nlnvs Ior?r f 4BV1 I wl,w V,VIIV Hackman has a wonderful cameo as a blind man. "Sleeper," (1973) with Diane Keaton and Allen, places Allen in the future for slapstick comedy. Some jokes work, but many don't. John Landis directed "Kentucky Fried Movie," (1977) showing tonight and tomorrow, a comedy in the same style of "Airplane." OTHER COMEDIES are "The Pink anther" (1964), "At ack of the Killer Tomatoes" (1978), "La Cage Aux Folles" (1979), "Monty Python's Life of Brian" (1979) and "A Hard Day's Night" (1964). For drama enthusiasts, "All The President's Men" (1976) depicts the events leading up to the discovery of the Watergate cover-up. Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford play the two Washington Post reporters. Robert Duvall won an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of "The Great Santini" (1980), filmed in Beaufort and based on Pat Conroy's novel. ossified SUBJECTS NEi i,?
