"Orgasm is like money. If you don't have it,
well, you're in trouble,"'said Dr. Lonnie Barbach
in her lecture Tuesday in Gambrell Hall.
Barbach said trying to meet society's expectations
about sex and the roles of men and women
in relationshiDS leads manv npnnlp intr? cpviiqI
problems.
"If we find out the national average is 2.2
times per week and we're doing it less, (we
think) there's something wrong with us," she
said.

"You're supposed to look like a Playboy
model, or a Vogue model, and if you don't,
you're not sexy," she said.
Barbach, author of several books on human
sexuality, said sex is learned. Men and women
have their senaratp spvnal anH ?ru ?r? im

One model is the "Fantasy Model" for men
and the other is the "Non-Model" for women.

Barbach said these models can prevent com- M

premarital sexual relationship with each other. tie
Seventy-six percent of the men said yes; 33 per

"That was the last discussion we had about

Barbach, Assistant Clinical Professor of

ilifornia Medical School, based her books

at counseling clinics.
"I'M SURE you're interested in how I learnall

"There was not one woman we interviewed
ho did not have a sexual problem sometime in

Barbach contrasted extremes in sexual atudes

recreation. Adolescents there are encouraged to
experiment in sex, she said.
sne said American attitudes about sex tend to
swing between extremes.
"THERE'S BEEN a sexual revolution; there
have been a lot of changes. Some of them are, I
think, positive."
After her presentation, Barbach opened the
floor for questions. The audience responded to
her slowly at first, but then were able to ask her
explicit questions easily.
One man was concerned about the way he felt
pressured into having sex, even if he simply
hugged his partner. Barbach called this the
"Ready Teddy Syndrome," in which she said
all men feel they are supposed to be always
ready for sex. Other questions ranged from
women's fears of oral sex to whether orgasm
was the key to sexual gratification.
Barbach has authored three books, "For
