Continental dril From Staff Reports One of the founding fathers of the continental drift theory, Tuzo Wilson, will kick off the dedication celebration of USC's Earth and Water Sciences Center today. Wilson, director of the Ontario Science Center, will give the keynote address on "The Earth in the 21st Century" at 5 p.m. today in Gambrell Auditorium. Presen^ tations by other geologists and marine scientists, including the National Science Foundation's director of ocean sciences, will continue through Wednesday. All lectures will be open to the public. During Wilson's visit to USC, he will inspect the fossils discovered by USC graduate student Sara Samson. Found last fall near Batesburg, the bedded fossils provide additional evidence for Wilson's theory and reveal, for the first time, that the southeastern United States was involved in w continental drift. IN RESPONSE to the find, the National Science Foundation awarded Samson's professor, Donald Secor, a $105,000 grant to investigate fossils in the Southeast. Two public lectures and an open forum on current geological issues will be presented tomorrow as part of the celebration. Clarence Allen, professor of geophysics at the California Institute of Technology, will address the topic "Is Earthquake Predic^ tion a Realistic Scientific Objective?" at 10:45 a.m. in the Law School Auditorium Karl Turekian, chairman of geology and geophysics at Yale University, will speak at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in Coker Life Sciences building room 211 about his work on radio isotopes, how quickly marine organisms can Catch the i ?i I r 7o~KENSFOR j ONE DOLLAR * | Hot Dogs?$.49 j BBQ? $1.39 university center ? du i fviairi Across From Towers Contemporary Soun and The Golden Spur present AIRBANl jm w~m**~r*v'nsr*'\ LsUivijrn 1111 April 19 ? -o Admission ? 50C MT ~zp? 1st Prize ? $25.00 If i 2nd Prize? $15.00 ^ ' 3rd Prize ? Jones Physical Sciences building on the west and 41 * r* .! nit ^ukci L.ue sciences Duuaing on tne east, brings researchers of different disciplines together in a central location, enhancing communication and cooperative research projects, according to Durig. The 84,729-square-foot facility, completed in 1981, houses the programs of marine science, geology and the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine Biology and Coastal Research. The dedication celebration will include open house tours of the facility's modern marine science and geology laboratories irum 10 io:qt> a.m. tomorrow. For marine , science research, the center features a 1,000-gallon tank, three lightcontrolled rooms for marine life growing experiments and two additional research rooms. Geology research laboratories housed by the Earth and Water Sciences Center include a stable isotope lab used in the study of the ocean's geologic history. The scope of geological research also has been increased with additional laboratory space. "We now can do research that was previously impossible because of space limitations," said Willard Moore, chairman of USC's geology department. nd Friday OLINA WOMEN'S CLINIC f Testing :ounseling and Services ! can be detected before missing period rol Counseling and Pills nd other Female Problems impton St., Columbia, S.C. 803-256-0128 SB| i Famous Foot Long Sandwich BB HHH BHHH HHBH HHB HBBH HBI A^^^OTLONG j r Good Only A Locations j|J w On March 29 and 30. 1983 ni Time Of Day f?f n Late 7 Days A Week gg irieties of Subs or tlads gg Coupon Per Person Per Visit H SRd I ??"**-?
