Herschel Walker, his first professional game behind him, still believes he made the right choice bv sienina with tho v ?o O v"v *,v" Jersey Generals and giving up his final year of collegiate eligibility. "I feel good about the decision I made," said Walker, who passed up his senior season at the University of Georgia to join the new United States Football League. Walker won the 1982 Heisman Trophy at Georgia, then surprised the football world two weeks ago by signing a reported three-year, $5 million contract with the Generals. Walker's initial outing as a pro was less than spectacular, as he carried 16 times for 65 yards and caught one pass for 3 yards in the Generals' 20-15 loss to the Los Angeles Express Sunday at the Los Angeles Coliseum. "A lot of the guys had more speed than I expected to see. And the execution was better ? I guess that's the biggest adjustment I have to make." Fairbanks said perhaps too much was expected of Walker in his first pro start. "Give the kid a break," the New Jersey coach said, pointing out that Walker has practiced about a week with the Generals. "We could have brought in a top-flight NFL back who has no familiarity with our system and it would have been difficult for him. yoffs continue vance to the championship game rjr tatively set for 7:40 p.m. tomorrow. I said before the game that we'd use other backs simply because Herschel had been with as only a week. "We didn't help Herschel a lot. We could have blocked better for him....I think Herschel will be a great pro back. He certainly doesn't have any physical or mental limitations that will stop him from doing it. "One thing I liked about Herschel," Fairbanks said, "is that he wanted to play. He'd have been in there every play if he could have." New Jersey quarterback Bobby Scott, formerly with the National Football League's New Orleans Saints, was impressed by Walker. "I was very pleased with Walker's performance after just that much practice," Scott said. "He only made two mistakes ? one play when I was sacked and one play when he turned the wrong way." ; USC Polo Clubtc by Jeff Hogars ' ten USC's Polo Club opens its 1983 icht's weekend at the National Colleg 'innpr Tournament Championships at < Baker Po*? anc* Country Club in Earian, game Billy Rhoad will play in the Nc r6:35 for Carolina, and Dibble Mannir Limehouse will play in the No s will spots. or the USC, which won the national o >w on be beating California in June, w single-elimination tournamen Cornell. will be publishei I Share your Spring Brea ^ j A post card from youi destination could be \* j The winner in each :f: catagories wins $ 10 J 1 - "Wish we were there' 4 2 - tasteless without beii (2 Q ' * V i f jim ?J " I UU WClll LildL IcXI clV J week?" 4 - prettiest - your own interpretation. >; -- And the one that we lil (for whatever reason) wi Alas, there are rules.
