Homosexuality was the controversial
subject of a debate at Russell House
Thursday night, which was as emotionally
charged as the issue itself.
The debate, sponsored by the Southern
Students Activists Network, was argued on

The arguments were not limited to
discrimination, however, and ranged from
the advocation of conservative views of the
traditional nuclear family to liberal views of
socialism being the answer to the gay rights
question.
THE DEBATE was argued by Chelsie
Snellgrove and Bill Martin, who favored
non-discrimination of homosexuals, and the

Martin substituted for the Rev. Fred r
Williams because of a mix-up. Stuart f

that he was told Williams was ill while <
Williams was told the debate had been j

it happened. (
Snellgrove presented the affirmative side
of the argument first. He argued that the j
end of gay oppression would require the r

society. He stressed the wishes of the c
people. (
"What kind of society do we wish to l
create? Not what does God want," he said.
THE CAPITALIST ruling class, ac- 1
cording to Snellgrove, sponsors "oppressive s
reactionary laws" and "promotes reac- '
tionary religious beliefs." He espoused a J
socialist society where gays would be able to
live their lifestyle freely. r

Maranatha Christian Center's Brian Diver, cent
ights Thursday night at a debate sponsored by t
tanked by his wife, Eleatta, and his opposition, Bii
Christian doctrine. He said homosexuals are
lostile toward God. He argued that
lomosexuality is a form of rebellion and
claimed gays are narcissists.
"God created man for fellowship with
lim; however, from the beginning man has
ejected the lordship of God," Diver said,

exchange natural functions for that which is

"Thus we see that the root of

family, God's basic unit."
Diver claimed that gays suffer from
strong feelings of guilt, jealousy and insecurity.
His argument culminated in the
claim that "sexual perversion is a sin
against God and society and not the basis for
any specific rights.
"Civil rights cannot be based on sexual
appetite and do not include license to
promote or subsidize perversion," he said.
"Gay rights are not civil rights."
Martin emphasized nature in his
argument against discrimination of
homosexuals and suggested a dichotomy
between nature and religion. "It's one thing
to talk about religion, to talk about God, to
talk about forces outside of nature; it's
another thing to talk about nature itself," he
said.

"ALL OF THESE (sexual) abilities that
have developed over thousands of years are
a refutation of what is natural for the human
body," Martin said.
Martin did agree with Diver on one point.
He said that homosexuality is indeed a
rebellion ? one against society.
"I believe that homosexuality is a form of
rebellion against the kind of society we have
that rips people apart. I think this society is
very much in need of being rebelled
agaiast," he said.
Martin rejected the traditional view of
religion and its place in society.
"Ultimately, religion says human beings in
a society cannot create their own moral
order. Condescending saviors have to come
down and create it for us. Frankly, we
haven't seen God lately. We've seen the selfappointed
messengers of God," he said.
"WHEN WE TALK about hatred of God, 1
don't know, because we don't know God, we
don't talk to God. We do see the impressions
laid down on us every day by reactionary
Christian people," he said.
Martin said he wasn't arguing in favor of
amorality. "As far as undermining the
family, maybe you ougwt to take a look at
some of the things undermining the family.
Just look at society. If that's what you want
to fight, fight the society. Don't blame
every umig 011 gay people.
"The question is," he said, "do you
support state terrorists' oppression and
discrimination against gays? If you do, then
join in with the reactionary Christians, and
then we homosexual rebels will fight against
you and we won't stop fighting."
Eleatta Diver reiterated some of her
husband's arguments, such as the
homosexual being at war with God and the
idea of the family.
"GOD HAS ordained the family ot
husband and wife, the family unit. He
created Adam and Eve, not Adam and
Steve," she said.
