Fiber artist to pre: through slide shov From Staff Reports Lee Malerich, a fiber artist whose work has been shown extensively in the South and Midwest, will present a program on her work today in Sloan College room 203 at 8 p.m. Her appearance at USC is part of the South Carolina Arts Commission's Fellowship Program, and is sponsored by USC's Department of Art. She will present a slide show of her work, accompanied by her own commentary. Malerich is an instructor of studio art and art history at Columbia College, and has developed a fiber arts program that includes silkscreen, textile design and weaving. "I think I've chosen embroidery as a method to produce my images because I want a longer relatinnshin with mv work " Malerich said. "I want it to be around for a , while." A magna cum laude graduate of Northern Illinois University, Malerich has been recognized as an Outstanding Young Woman of America. The exhibit includes samples of blac professional, educational an organizational journals and programs; copy of the Palmetto Leader, a Ieadir black newspaper published for many yeai in Columbia; and an 1855 edition of " Catechism for the Religious Instruction < Persons of Colour," also published i Columbia. Also included are several histories < South Carolina blacks; autobiographies < Rartha Kitt Rrniinmin Mavc anH riovolor Sellers; and the novels of Annie Greer Nelson, the state's earliest known blac woman novelist. Displayed in the library's book divisioi the exhibit is the second in a monthly seri< of exhibits dealing with various aspects < state history and culture.
