TONY'S 1 Perhaps it's the friendly atmosphere and congenial waitresses that make Tony's Pizza such a popular place with USC students. Or perhaps it's the convenient drive-thru window. Perhaps it's the fact that Tony's is much more than a pizza place. Or perhaps it's the restaurant's low prices. Or perhaps it's just that the food at Tony's Pizza is so good. DRIVING OUT on Knox Abbott Drive, one cannot miss Tony's, under the colorful sign v/v h ! V oldfashioned cyclist. Tony's is, a modest, friendly structure a description that applies to the atmosphere inside as well. The restaurant spate: nnlv AR and is usually close to that capacity. For both lunch ana Jiiiner, Tony's offers good food at good prices, and owner Bill Anderson is acutely aware of his student clientele. "We want students to know our price structure is well within their price structure," Anderson explained. 4'And we give them a lot for their money." "Some students are only eating one meal a day," he continued, j "They'll come in late afternoon and order a Chef's Salad and a sandwich. Now, I'm a big eater and I can't put that away." TONY'S MOST popular item is its spaghetti, according to Anderson. The restaurant offers a half dozen different sauces, and all are delicious. All spaghetti dinners are served with a tossed salad and two . slices of hot crunchy, buttered garlic bread. Unless in an expensive restaurant, this writer's experience with spaghetti has been mostly negative. But Tony's spaghetti is never overcooked and watery, nor undercooked and stiff. And the cook doesn't skimp on the sauce. Tony's also offers a variety of hero sandwiches, a favorite with ofii/4/infp of IVin iirinHmir OtUUV/lltO at UI^ VlJL A V v till V4 W 111UV/ TV . From the Hero Supreme at $2.75 to the steak sandwich at $2.95, all of these feature a thick spread of meat. OF COURSE, pizza is also served at Tony's. A small pizza for three dollars and change (depending on which toppings one chooses) is enough for most lunchtime pizza lovers. This customer's favorite is the mushrooms and pepperoni combination, featuring plenty of fresh mushrooms and thick pepperoni slices. The crust is tasty, fairly thin and never soggy. The restaurant also offers crispy salads of many kinds, priced from 75 cents to the Chef's Salad at $1.95. A cold plate with chicken or tuna congealed salad, chips, ham, eggs, cheese, dill spears, lettuce and tomato is available for $2.75. rice. The service was outstanding and although the waiter was always around to refill our drinks, we never felt smothered by his presence. Overall, the prices at Bamboo Garden are more than reasonable for the service and quality of food. BAMBOO GARDENalso offers buffet specials for lunch and dinner. Owner Anderson is rightfully proud of the friendly little place he's run since then. And talking to any of Tony's regular customers will uncover a similar attachment.
