I , 1 ? Summer! adds new By Julie Jameson A third summer school session will 1 * * ue onerea to USC students in 1983, said Michael Welsh, assistant provost. Two five-week sessions and one seven-week session are the options given students planning to enroll in summer school. The seven-week session will begin at the same time as the first five-week session and will overlap the second five-week session. The seven-week session was suggested by both students and faculty members, said Welsh, Ad Hoc Summer Study Committee chairman. THE SEVEN-WEEK program would increase the time for teaching and assignments, said T.L. Gunter, USC's registrar. "The compromise will add some continuity to the SDe^ifio rnnr?ac " The committee also decided to have four days of classes (MondayThursday) each week instead of five, Welsh said. Saturday classes will not be held either. 4'This will be convenient for both students and the university," Welsh said. "Students will have a long weekend for studying, and the university will save energy on air conditioning ? an appealing prospect." NO ADDITIONAL state dollars are provided to support summer school costs, and the program must become self-supporting, he said. No limit will be set for undergraduate course loads, Welsh said. Last summer, students could take a maximum of six hours. Also, oncampus housing will be available to both part-time and full-time students this summer. Students will be able to advance register for summer school under the Optical Scanner Computer Assistant Kegistration. OSCAR will be available the last three weeks in April and will eliminate summer school j drop/add. The master schedule of summer school courses will be ready around March 15, Welsh said. "AT THIS POINT, the registrar has called out for the summer school schedule," Welsh said. The deans of the schools will submit their schedules sometime in Fphnmrv I The exact number of classes offered will not be known until February, but with an additional session, there should be more courses from which to choose, Welsh said. Students anticipate the new system will improve both study habits and summer job opportunities. g mm Photo by Am I in an accident behind the Carolina Coliseui out 10:20 p.m. last night after the USC-! rtment spokesman said the pedestrian was ispital.
