Naturally to us, her parents, she is special. However, the circumstances involved with her birth are probably of interest to many. She was born in our apartment. Though we felt the time was right in our lives to have a child, we had little money in our savings. (My being a Carolina student is a major reason for this.) Neither did we have insurance, J ??4L a 'am* in aiip ctllU Willi uiu^ d icw iiimuiu iui ui uui pregnancy, we fully realized "how costly it could have been for us to have our baby in a hospital. So we seriously began to consider an economical home birth and started looking for a good midwife. We found one. At first, we were concerned about the many rumors and bits of knowledge we were hearing about the Top of Carolir To: University of South Carolina sti staff: This letter has been written to inform Viot urill fnb-n nlnnn of fha Tftn r\( CfirSklino vi&ctv vt iii lanv, piavv aw w*v a up wi vat wiuiu To begin with, I want to thank those oi to the letter regarding the Top of Carol Gamecock on Nov. 5. Then, the midwife assured us that if we had been getting good prenatal care and the future mother was proceeding along through the pregnancy healthily, we had every reason to expect a smooth home birth. We met these criterion. Also, she informed us that she could see any possibly dangerous situation developing far enough in advance for us to have time to go and get whatever necessary services at a hospital. The midwife, having had much (it a^uvai 1CIH.C, ucipcu ur> iu dispel all of our fears and doubts. Still, I feel it took courage on my wife's part to actually go through with the home birth, especially since the midwife informed us that no anesthetics would be used.
