Though encouraged by softball participation, Director of Publicity and Special Events Stephanie Homeyer said she would like to see participation in the other sports grow as well. "We would like to see the participation in the other sports such as basketball, bowling and wrestling become equivalent to softball's," she said. Entry cards for all sports can be obtained at the intramural office, Blatt Physical Education Center room 102. Calendars I listing the entry dates may also be obtained in the office, and the office will assist students who want to play intramural softball and / or basketball, but do not have a team. "I see a better attitude here than when I was at Florida State or SMU (Southern Methodist University)." Collins coaches the swim team and oversees the entire water sports program, which includes the diving team and recruiting responsibilities. The actual on-deck diving coach is Mark Finneran. Jim Villa acts as assistant for both teams. So far this season, both the men's and women's teams hold 2-1 dual meet records. On Dec. 2, the two teams suffered their first defeats to the powerful Alabama swim teams. Leading the male Gamecock swimmers is junior Chris Berry, who, according to Collins, "is probably swimming the best of anyone on the team. He has one of the fastest 50-yard freestyle times in the country." 1981 National Collegiate Athletic Association Ail-American Rob Bedford is back swimming for USC after sitting out last year's season because of illness.
