Trilogy's final By Chris Handal The regular early morning yell of horror was the sound of Arthur Dent waking up and suddenly remembering where he was. It wasn't that the cave was cold; it wasn't just that it was damp and smelly. It was that the cave was in the middle of Islington, and there wasn't a bus due for two million years. So begins Douglas Adams' "Life, the Universe and Everything," the last novel of the trilogy that began with "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and continued in "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe." The conclusion to this science fiction farce lacks something its predecessors had ? a plot. WHILE "Hitchhiker's Guide" seemed to have a semblance of a plot and "Restaurant" at least had a structure, "Life, the Universe and Everything" is at times little more than zany, harmless stream-ofOAncniniicnacc mpitind flno tinff v.v/iiaviv/uaiiv/0k) wiivuig, iiv? ting aimlessly along. And yet, it is funny. Roughly, the book deals with the attempt by Dent (the feckless sole survivor of Earth stranded on prehistoric Earth), Ford Prefect (a researcher for that remarkable book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"), Slartiblast (vice president for the committee for Real Time), Zaphod Beeblebrox (two-headed former president of the Galaxy) and Trillian (a space cadet) to save the universe from destruction. The title of Adams' book comes from "Hitchhiker's," when these characters were searching for the answer to life, the universe and everything. After discovering the answer, they realized the discovery was meaningless since they weren't s?rft of the sneoifir miration "Restaurant" deals with the twin search for the man who actually runs the galaxy (another mystery from "Hitchhiker's") and the ultimate question. The question was not found. ???i M??M???B??M?I \\ i?????-?_ i Buy One 1 | Get One F N (Of Equal Value) (Your Choice) jj After 3:OOPM fj at Both Locatior Claire Towers | Senate at Marion |j 252-7032 Expires: 12-1 8-S I Papa joe' I student a la Pre-Exai 1 nil ti I Er HII The k|g|pt~ J book lacks pic I _ " ^ - ?l?fi BKij Douglas A (dams' final book in his zany trilogy lacks plot. book review HENCE, THE continuing search is this book's claim to be the third in a trilogy, though it deals only tangentiallv with the ultimate question. Specifically, it deals with the reluctance of the characters to save the universe and updates readers of the first two books on the characters' condition. It also deals with many hilarious incidents and concepts strung together for 226 pages. Though not as bizarre as those in "Hitchhiker's Guide," they are still enjoyable. The secret of invisibility is revealed. If one cloaks an object with an S.E.P. (Somebody Else's Problem) field, the object will become invisible because no one is concerned with someone else's problems. One of the memorable minor characters is an immortal who, dissatisfied with his immortality, travels around the aalaxv insulting individuals one by one: Most of those who are born immortal instinctively know how to cope with it, but Wowbagger was not one of them. Indeed, he had come to hate them, the load of serene bastards. He had his immortality inadvertently thrust upon him by an unfortunate accident with irrational paricle accelerator, a liquid lunch and a pair of rubber hands... So things began to pall for him. The merry smiles he used to wear at other people's funerals began to fade. He began to despise the Universe in general and everybody in it in particular. This was the point at which he conceived his purpose, the thing that would drive him on, and which, as far as he could see, would drive him on JVJ! vc r Air wud iruo. He would insult the Universe. THESE ARE only a few examples of the ample madness within the pages of "Life, the Universe and Everything." The ending is a letdown, but that shouldn't nullify the sheer enjoyment in reading the book. The satire and comic episodes strung throughout are enough to carry the book; they've been enough to carry it on the New York Times Best Sellers' List. For readers who have journeyed with Douglas Adams before, this novel is worth the few hours it takes to read. Readers unfamiliar with Adams should go back and read his two previous works. That is not to say the first two are needed to enjoy this book, but they are better novels and will helD exDlain some of the craziness of "Life, the Universe and Everything." miNBOvyifc^ UB S ARCADE^^k I 920 Main St. "^fil ouncing a New 1 Bally Game ! tURGERTIME | ith Purchase of I T _l vunn 01 lOKens t a 99<t Pitcher I Between 5-9 11 ixpires: 12-21-82 | 6 Tokens for $ I | bb coupon 'ery u.sx I May with I eeial...
