Dire Straits' lai demonstrates t By MIcHmI Romatowski Black, ominous storm clouds roll like a fearsome wave through the night sky. There is a sudden, jagged flash of lightning, as breathtakingly beautiful as it is wicked. In this turmoil there is no compromise; anything weak runs the risk of being blown away or dashed to smithereens. This scene is depicted on the cover of the new Dire Straits album, "Love Over Gold" ? and the music within is smashing reinforcement of that picture. Songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, in the space of only five songs, has. created a record that crackles with all the expiosiveness 01 an electrical storm. On the group's 1980 release, "Making Movies," Knopfler proved himself a masterful storyteller. His romantic epics such as "Tunnel of Love" and "Romeo and Juliet" blended soft intimacy with the sharp edges of reality. ONLY THE barest traces of softness remain on "Love Over Gold." The characters in the songs, from the detective in "Private Investigations" to the beggars in "It Never Rains," have been hurt badly. They are hard, cold and alone ? and determined not to get hurt again. Despite this pain, "Love Over Gold" is an exhilarating record, and Knopfler is the driving force. The band has evolved since the days of its hit single "Sultans of Swing"; Dire Straits has become Mark Knopfler, and vice versa. While drummer Pick Withers and keyboardist Alan Clark perform brilliantly throughout, the entire record seems to represent an open window to Knopfler's mind. The drums rumble like thunder, the piano riffs tumble like waterfalls and Knopfler's sensuous guitar solos twist and burn throughout. At 14 minutes long, the first song, "Telegraph Road," is almost an album in itself. Despite its length, it is the best song of the five. The lyrical sweep is stunning; the tale of a simple man and his wilderness cabin evolves into an epic about hard times, war and life interpreted as "just a bet on a race between the lights." Propelled by Withers' drumming and Hal Lindes' rhythm guitar, "Telegraph Road" packs a wallop unlike any other song Dire Straits has recorded. Knopfler portrays a detective who digs up treachery and treason, but claims "when I find it, I still can't get used to it." After an echoing rap, Knopfler bursts into another stinging guitar solo. Side two opens with "Industrial Disease," ; a more conventional rock tune that contains | the album's only humor: Doctor Parkinson declared "I'm not surprised to see you here You've got smoker's cough from smoking, brewer's droop from drinking beer I don't know how you came to get the Bette Davis kneea But worst of all young man you've got Industrial Disease" THE TITLE cut has the album's prettiest melody, and Knopfler, though certainly not a great singer, manages to do it justice. The song's images of "dancers on thin ice" lend it a fragility not present in the other cuts. The last song, "It Never Rains," ends in brutality: And he takes you out in Vaudeville Valley With his hand up smothering your screams And he screws you down in Tin Pan Alley In the city ofabillion dreams "Love Over Gold" serves both as a stirring sequel to "Making Movies" and as a stepping-stone for Dire Straits' future.
