Religious studies professor Kevin Lewis is teaching "Love," an experimental course on love education, this semester. Listed as RELG 491A, the course will explore love in its historical and cultural changes. "We need to recover a notion of what love is," Lewis said. COURSE MATERIAL includes spiritual, historical, psychological and literary aspects of love. Students read, watch films and listen to music. Eric Fromme's "The Art of Loving" has already been discussed in class. Works by Dante and film excerpts from Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" and Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" will also be covered, Lewis said. "We're looking for intriguing statements about the meaning of love," Lewis said. The class will be awakened to what love should be by talking about it, Lewis said. Because the class is small (13 students) and has a diversity of students and opinions, Lewis said he feels there is good potential for discussion. TUP: CLASS cpnsists of 12 upperclassmen and one fresh man. Lewis said if the class were larger, he would lecture more. Jackie Dowdy, a senior journalism major, said she enjoys the class. She said she likes its size because it is easier to get to know everyone. Lewis said he was encouraged last winter to begin the class by a friend and colleague with whom he had taught a course on death and dying. "It seemed like a natural complement because in order to deal with the death of a loved one, you have to examine what love really is to you," Lewis said. LEWIS RECEIVED permission to offer the class last spring. Getting permission was not an easy task, Lewis said; he had to get approval from several departments because the suoject 01 love calls tor exploration into several academic areas. He said he must be careful not to exaggerate his predictions for the course's uncertain future. If it is well-received, Lewis said he must get approval to continue the course from several departments. But for now, Lewis said the class has been a fun and educational experience for him.
