Cable televi;

If USC officials approve, it's possible
students will be able to receive cable
television in their dorm rooms or apartments,
in addition to the present cable
service in some dorm lounges.
"We haven't placed any barriers on
providing cable TV to the dormitories," Bud
Tibshrany, Columbia Cable Television vice
president and general manager, said.

(cable service in dorm rooms), if it can be
worked out economically among the
students, the university and the cable
company."
CCTV, the area's only franchised cable
compan;. offers cable service to McBi yde
Quadrangle, Maxcy, Columbia Hall, Wade
Hampton Hotel and Capstone lounges, in
addition to University Terrace Apartments
and Carolina Gardens, both USC family
housing.
The dorm lounges' installation fees and
cable service bills are paid by Student
Government and financed by money taken

Although "Apathy Rules" seems to be the
political banner under which many USC
students congregate, at least one USC
student has taken a big step into state
politics.
Shelly Vandervelde, a senior philosophy
and psychology major, is running for the
District 78 seat in the S.C. House of

"My major reason for running is to make
sure our views are gotten across to the
public," she said. Her campaign will
"question the authority" of the incumbent
"and that's what the Libertarian Party is all
about," she said.
Vandervelde coordinates the campus
Students for Libertarian Society and chairs
the Richland County Libertarian Party. She
has never held a public office and said she is
"not a politician."
Her husband, Steven, a USC graduate
student, is vice chairman of the S.C.
Libertarian Party.

Wertz said. "It would be offered purely as a
service to students.''
According to Wertz, billing probably
would have to be handled by CCTV, but USC
would help collect any delinquent bills. "The
issue is certainly not dead," he said.
Tibshrany said a survey of each dorm
would have to be done before a decision is
made. He added that extensive work on the
older buildings might be necessary to allow
for cable installation.
Macaulay said provisions for cable

He said Horseshoe apartments have
cable capabilities, but he wasn't sure about
cable provisions.
USC and CCTV have not formally
discussed the installation of cable in dorm
rooms.

Tibshrany said, "If there is interest by the
university, we would pursue it as quickly as

1975, but Libertarian candidates did not
appear on the ballot until the 1980 elections,
when Ed Clark ran for president.
Traditionally the Libertarian Party has
been associated with college-aged adults,
and South Carolina's party is no exception,
Vanderveldesaid.
Although the present chairman, Steven
Kreisman, is a Spartanburg physician, his
predecessor took the chair at age 23.
Vandervelde considers her youth an asset.
"There are a lot of young middle-class individuals
coming out of school into a new tax
bracket," she said. "And our party is very
radical, and therefore will naturally appeal
to the youth. "
