Two films at local t By Doug Bell The battles are not only on the ballfields this weekend. The screens of two local movie theaters will be raging with two very different views of war and warfare. 1 "Gallipoli," the prestigious Australian film, will play at Russell House tonight and Saturday night. Directed by Peter Weir, this intimately detailed and exciting film examines Australia's involvement in a devastating battle against the Turkish forces early in World War I. Less a blistering anti-war statement than a hymn to youthful camaradery marking the end of the innocent age, "Gallipoli" focuses on two strapping lads ? one genuinely r DRINK 'N PlZZftXi fbrpizzaouti&Piz: Saturday, Octobt Immediately Afl the USC-CINCIN1S _ _ - - Liame Celebrate Horrn with Ice Cold Mi of Beer -- 25c "Come Join The F I 707 Saluda Ave. I ??TP ' HHHM Snun >v^jB: WB I B |n^' ^?raF,f lum ' I". Weir combines Australia's haunting ambiance and an authentic period flavor to fashion this stirring movie. The moral dilemmas are a bit too cut and dried, but the film on the whole is a rewarding experience. "Atomic Cafe," playing at Nickelodeon on Main Street, is a war film of a different color, kind and intensity. Half hilarious, half harrowing, "Atomic Cafe" is a totally absorbing movie. It offers a unique view of America during those years: the shameless government and military propaganda, the nervous public, the air raid drills, Sen. Joe McCarthy's Red scare. In some ways the film is a revelation; could we really have been so embarrassingly wrongheaded only 30 years ago? I can't think of a documentary so lightly entertaining, yet simultaneously grim. I recommend it, if only for the priceless glimoses of President Harry Truman caught off guard and Vice President Richard Nixon ridiculously exposed. ?
