Figures confuse president
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Reagan interrupted his
recent 17-day stay at his ranch to make two live radio
broadcasts to the nation.
In one address, Reagan took note of the fact that employment
figures are adjusted to compensate for seasonal
factors.
"Today there are nearly 100 million (people) at work, more
than 100 million, according to the unadjusted figures, and 99.8
million in the seasonally adjusted figures, " Reagan said.
"Now if that confused you," Reagan told Americans, "well
I'm confused too."
And that's where he let the matter rest, with no further
explanation.
Let chips fall where they may
PUAItlE I)U SAC, Wis. (AF) - Kurt Scott isn't one to let the
chips fall where they may. In fact, his prowess with the chip
shot has landed him a trip to the national cow-chip throwing
championships in Beaver, Okla., next month.
Srntt of Roodshiiru won the state title Saturdav with a 172
foot, 6-inch toss.
The state women's champ was Sheri Krintz of Prairie du
Sac, with a toss of 94 feet, 7 inches. Kay Hankins, also of
Prairie du Sac, the 1981 winner and four-time world champ,
registered an 83-foot, 4-inch fling.
The game's raw material plays a big role in the contest,
competitors say.
"A lot of it is in the chip," Mrs. Hankins said. "I look for
one that is not too big and not too small, but just right. Then I
just throw it as hard as I can into the wind."

'Doonesbury' cast
FAIRWAY, Kan. (AP) - As of the beginning of next year,
say goodbye to Zonker, Joanie, Uncle Duke, B.C., Mike and
the rest of the cast of "Doonesbury" for about 18 months.
Cartoonist Garry Trudeau says they are "confused and out
of sorts," and he himself needs "a breather."
"For almost 15 years, the main characters have been
trapped in a time warp, and so find themselves carrying the
colors and the scars of two separate generations." Trudeau
said in a statement issued Wednesday by Universal Press,
which syndicates the strip.
World Bank donors (
TORONTO (AP) ? World Bank donor countries, angered
by a congressional decision to cut U.S. contributions to the
appnev that rives interest-free loans to the world's neediest
nations, barred U.S. companies from at least $640 million in
foreign contracts.
The 31 other donors to the World Bank's International
Development Agency ? all but the United States ? agreed on
the ban Wednesday, during the joint annual meeting here of
the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, World
Bank spokesman Moeen Oureshi told a news conference.

allowed in the next two fiscal years to channel their contributions
into a "special fund" parallel to International
Development Agency's regular lending pool.
Oureshi said the special fund was created in reaction to a
congressional decision to stretch over four years the $3.24
billion IDA contribution that former President Jimmy Carter
had promised would be delivered in three years, 1981 through
1983. The move, in effect, cut the annual U.S. contribution to
the agency.
When some other nations also reduced their contributions

strip will stop Jan. 2 and will not resume until the fall of 1984.
The strip, which now runs in nearly 700 papers, began with 28
subscribers in 1970 as an outgrowth off a strip Trudeau drew
for Yale's college newspaper while a student there. Trudeau
won a Pulitzer Prize in 1975.
:ut foreign contracts
in an attempt to put pressure on the United States, the IDA
was forced to drop its 1982 lending to $2.7 billion, a 35 percent
reduction from the planned $4.1 billion.
The IDA currently makes 50-year, interest-free loans for
development projects in the poorest countries, such as India,
Madagascar and Senegal.
Loans from regular IDA sources and the new parallel
special fund "will be handled and administered in exactly the
same way," Oureshi said.
The onlv difference is that contracts stemming from
"special fund" projects will only be open to the developing
nations and to donors who put money into the fund.
One World Bank official said the decision was more
"symbolic" than practical and said it would have only a
slight effect on U.S. companies. There was no immediate
U.S. reaction to the decision.
Besides the United States, any countries that choose to give
to IDA in the normal way will be also excluded. Eleven
nations ? among them West Germany ? have indicated they
