89-year-old 'Gre By Carla N. Seitz Just because she's 89 years old doesn't mean Zoe Routh can't relate to college students. In fact, she may be one of the favorite i landlords of USC students. "One of the nicest things about this place," said business major Arleen Floyd, "is Mrs. Houth." MRS. ROUTH, whom some of her neighbors call "the legend of Greene Street," has lived there and rented apartments in her home for more than 60 years. She is awake by 8 a.m. and watches Johnny Carson every night, said her grandson John, better known as last year s "Cocky," the Carolina mascot. Mrs. Routh has managed the apartments since her husband died in 1946, and she does many of the repairs herself, John said. If there's something she can't do, she'll find someone to help her. When Mrs. Routh and her husband moved to Greene Street after World War I, there were only a few hundred students on campus. "The university grew up around her," her grandson said. "She's lived here longer than anyone else around." MRS. ROUTH said the only time she moved from Greene Street was during World War II when the university was turned into a naval base and extensive military operations were conducted here. She and her husband, Foster Routh, moved onto the campus, and he worked as a pharmacist at the infirmary. "The nurses were lovely people," she said. She enjoyed participating in faculty activities then.
