Back pain won't keep Gt ATHENS, GA. (AP) - Tommy Thurson doesn't know what i c\A fhp nnin in hi?i hark hut it'c arinarantln nnt n i taUJV'" "" * " u v,nuj nui a i U(IIU1CU I disc that could cripple him - so he's ready to play football t with the Georgia Bulldogs. "I'm ready," said the 220-pound linebacker who led the Bulldogs in tackles last season. "I want to be out there Sept. 6 (when Georgia opens its season at home against Clemson in a nationally televised game). "I don't want to be sitting in the stands or on the bench. I want to be in there from the start." Thurson had been sidelined with what was diagnosed as a ruptured spinal disc. Now he has pain in the hamstring muscles of his legs. Doctors cleared Thurson to practice with the stipulation he go through an hour-long routine of stretching exercises at the start of each practice. "They're not sure if it's a hamstring problem that has caused the back pain, or a disc problem that has caused hamstring pain." Thurson said Wednesday. I The only way to ten lor sure, ne saia, is expioraiory surgery, and that option is out of the question. "We don't know exactly what the problem is," Coach Vince | MEN'S TENNIS A_ B I SHORTS hi.9^ & "P ill m s~\ iSs aI** J*4 I I! ffwnmst ski | Save i | 100% Pure Shetli by GLtt and \ I HB 1 M^m^mtoSs ^^K$$^^$$^$-. i ^^y^saHWBB^BB S| 1 .;jK tb? 1 jpBpBwpB^BBfcMaHBa^^^^.Jy^KBBBBB^^B^B^^jMaJB IfWz&BamUEHiMMB CWK jj S0UARL * COLUM1 iorgia's Thurson off field )ooley said. "But we do know that the only thing Tommy is isking is more pain. The doctors have more or less left it up o Tommy. If he can play, he'll play. If he can't, he won't." "Right now they think I just need a lot of stretching before play and everything will be fine. I'm not stupid. If it starts hurting, I'll wait until next year to play. Otherwise, I'll play this season," said Thurson, who had 46 solo tackles and 86 assists last season. As inside linebacker, Thurson's job is to stop anyone coming through between the offensive tackles. "If they want to come in there, I'm the hit man," he said. "If a team ran up the middle all day, I'd be satisfied with that." Clemson quarterback Homer Jordan, however, is a sprintout specialist, something which complicates Thurson's job. "Homer goes to the corner a lot," Thurson said. "I'll have to be on my toes. I have to get good on pass coverage in the next week and a half. Clemson hits you everywhere, so we need to be consistent in everything we do." CAROUN^^^ LONG-SLEEVE I ?/, y^ sPeciai J^?ji / >-?
