Los Angeles of 40 years hence is beyond the scope of the gumshoe's intellect. A GOOD example of a summer sci-fi bomb is John Carpenter's "The Thing." The story is about a group of Americans at an Antartic base confronting an alien stranded in the wasteland by a crash landing and frozen in the ice for 100,000 years. This "Thing," once thawed (by Qomp ill-fataH Nnrwpaiansl begins to kill and digest humans. What makes the Thing particularly difficult to destroy is its ability to assume the appearance of any type and any number of the living creatures it slays. Kurt Russell is the lead in a cast that includes some good actors, but instead of developing its characters, the film showcases the Thing's attacks and tran sformations. "The Thing" fails to produce a cohesive tension, a strong unifying sense of a desperate, inexorable confrontation between a group of well-rounded characters and the alien invader.
