Late Telephone directorie: By Forrest Brown Three major university publications - the USC Telephone Directory, the Garnet and Black, and the Freshman Record will be delivered late this fall. The directories were originally scheduled to be delivered to students today. Jerry Brewer, assistant to the dean of student affairs, said they are now scheduled to be delivered to students Sept. 7. He said late dftlivprips of liniv*?rcitv fplpnhnnp Hirppfnrioc J are not unique. "We try to have it out the day classes start," Brewer said, "but this has happened before." The problem began when all of the student and faculty telephone numbers were recorded on six computer tapes and sent to the printers in Philadelphia, Brewer said. The tapes were unsuitable for the type of computers the printers used, so they were returned. The USC Computer Department made the necessary modifications to the tapes, and then they had to be sent back to Philadelphia. The process took about one week, according to Brewer. "It would be nice if we had a local printer, but we had to go i i?1-1 fisar^S fS^SWENS i nI f,ne f? I OPENING IN SI I K<?$r ^ AT THE CORNER OF C I EAT IN OR TAKE OUT 1. Ham & Cheese 2. Valuable time was lost while the tapes were in the mail, he added. Brewer said if the 16,000 copies of the directory are not delivered by Sept. 3, a penalty clause will go into effect. Vicki Jinnette, former editor-in-chief of the Garnet and Black, said she had contacted Josten's and was informed the yearbooks should be out by the first week in October. According to the contract, the Garnet and Black was to be delivered August 15. Jinnettesaid the staff would have waited until classes began to deliver the yearbook even if it had arrivaH nn time Jinnette cites extensive staff problems as the reason the Garnet and Black is coming out at least a month later than planned. She said staff vacancies and lack of communication between staff members were the major cause of the delay. The academics and sports editors quit during yearbook production. The sports editor would have been fired anyway, she said. Also, "we had two student life editors," Jinnette said, and J4ho\y frAitKIa rfnffinrf f ArtnfVinr f/\ tnKof rlr* ' * I1UU bi VUMIV 5^tUII5 tV70V/lll^l IV Ul^VlUC VYllUl IV/ UU. i; DIVING EQUIP\ S^ I; by: SCUBAPRO <[ DACOR ,|i SHERWOOl 'I U.S. DIVERT !: f% Y 1 AT ;jj PADICERTIFIO ; i 12 Specialty C< ?EN^ i BACK PACKS ACTOR Y War bv,; rvwi^isi ,, EAGLE CREEK P 0D i I n\X/F Al PINF < EPTEMBER j; w/ COLLEGE & MAIN ] A A ^ n n n n n - - - - J ORDER BY NUMBER { WHOLE HALF | 2.70 1.65 I 2.25 1.40 2.70 1.60 2.70 1.60 2.80 1.65 3.95 2.30 2.60 1.55 2.70 1.65 H? ? The new editor-in-chief of the Garnet and Black and forme Greek editor, Joe Hughes, disagrees with Jinnette assessment of the problems. "There really wasn't such thing as a deadline. She (Jir nette) didn't have any in-house deadlines," Hughes said. Hughes said the editor-in-chief is responsible to make sur the staff does the work. "The ultimate responsibility falls on the editor-in-chief, Hughes said. The Freshman Record, a publication made for and pui chased by freshman students, was originally scheduled t come out the third week in September, according to Studer Government President Ashley Abel.
