Evans was named defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach. DICKERSON WAS probably offered the job Friday while Evans was contacted Sunday night, according to Colorado Sports Information Director John Clagett. The pair were among 11 assistants named by McCartney, who replaced Chuck Fairbanks June 9. Fairbanks resigned June 1 to take a coaching job with the new United States Football League. USC Head Football Coach Richard Bell is hoping to hire a running back coach as soon as possible, according to Mike Nemeth, Carolina sports information director for football. The new assistant coach will probably be named in a matter of days, while the search for Dickerson's replacement will probably take longer. DICKERSON, 33, earned three letters as a defensive back for Kansas State University. He played one season for the Miami Dolphins of the NFL before a broken leg ended his athletic career. A B Pennsylvania native, Dickerson joined Jackie Sherrill's 1 University of Pittsburgh coaching staff in 1978. Dickerson joined USC's athletic staff in May 1981 with the I responsibility of overseeing all sports in the athletic department except football and men's basketball. He got his first head coaching job in 1963 with Sisterville High School in New York. Evans served as an assistant coach at Salem College in West Virginia in 1965 and 1966. The next year, he was promoted to the head coaching position. He followed Carlen to Texas Tech University in 1970 and Carolina in 1975. After Carlen was fired as USC's head coach in December 1981, Evans accepted an assistant coaching position with Texas AandM.
