Split Enz's exhibits m By Marc Fink Split Enz has reached a new level of creativity with its fourth LP, "Time and Tide," a fantastic follow-up to the New Zealand quintet's mediocre 1981 release "Waiata." Partial credit for this successful release is the addition of Hugh Padgham as co-producer. Padgham ? - nas produced Genesis and The Police, and has incorporated characteristics of those bands into the most complex and ambitious album recorded by Split Enz. Eddie Rayner's keyboards serve as the sonic backdrop for songs with basic themes of personal frustration, caused Dy the human condition and New Zealand's island environment. Neil Finn, guitar, and Noel Crombie, drums and percussion, highlight most of the upbeat cuts. Country/pop singer Juice New .Innn 1 Q at A n m t:?l??^ ? ?, * w ? "Time and Tide" has also risen on the international album charts on the strength of those three humorous cuts, in particular. The messages in "Make Sense of It," "Small World" and "Giant Heartbeat" clearly warn that this world is coming apart because ~ ~ 1 ' ?-- ' - man lias lei ills ignorance and suspicions grow. "Pioneer" is a brief Rayner instrumental bursting with sound, as a score for a Cecil B. DeMille movie-of-thepast. "Haul Away" and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" are most strongly influenced by sailors' tunes, which are bound tightly to the culture of an island nation like New tita ici nu. Split Enz became more commonly known in 1980 with the smash single "I Got You " from the laser-etched LP "True Colours." "Time and Tide" displays tremendous growth and sophistication by the band, its lyrics conveying social ^esponsiouiiy and emotion without sap. On "Time and Tide," Split Enz has proven themselves a band for the 80s. ds Paladium on Saturday, k admission price of $10.95.
