Brian May's electronic guitar doodles are the only redeeming feature on these four cuts, especially "Back Chat." "Action This Day" closes Side 1, leaving optimism as futile funk is replaced by the tongue-in-cheek descended from "Bicycle Race." SIDE 2 is superior to Side 1, with "Put Out The Fire," a ghost of Queen passed and the album's only rocker. Stream-of-Lennon lyrics with musical bits from "Blue Jay Way," "Imagine" and "Across the Universe," make "Life Is Real" an authentic pop homage to Lennon. Rather than imitating Lennon and the Beatles, Queen fires its photon torpedoes dead center on this track, creating the proper atmosphere. "Calling All Girls" is the sleeper of "Hot Space." After radio and clubs wear out the grooves on Side l's disco disasters, "Calling All Girls," featuring May's interwoven guitars, should be a hit. DAVID BOWIE refused to lend backing vocals to "Cool Cat," and that fact should reveal enough about this vehicle for Leo Sayer. If you thought "Somebody to I -J t-r . _ sir ?? ijuvf cinu Liuvc vji iviy Life" were saccharine, "Cool Cat" is cyclamate over-kill.
