USC then routed The Citadel 19-6 to enter the finals of the losers bracket where they lost to Spartanburg 15-6. The Spartanburg match saw tempers flare in a hard fought contest to see who placed third in the tournament. The season ended for USC's Rugby Club last weekend in a manner that characterized their first season finishing with a below .500 record. After jumping to a quick 10-0 lead over Clemson thanks to two trys by Steve Bates within the first 20 minutes of the contest, the Tigers began to regain their composure while USC seemed to tire out. Clemson scored on a free kick to close the margin to 10-3 before the end of the half. "We caught them cold, which was our game plan," head coach Jean Pierre Chambas said. "Our game plan worked, but we couldn't hold them off," Chambas continued. According to Chambas the officiating did not help USC either. Toward the end of the iiiaurn, wnen uiemson was applying pressure at USC's end, the referee missed a call that gave Clemson a try and a conversion to take the lead. Coach Chambas was so irate that he was given a technical foul, his first during his seven year coaching career at Carolina.
