Unfortunately, it is often the case that while they sit around and complain and talk about what they could or ought to do, students often end up doing nothing. Everyone knows "actions speak louder than words." Today, many students are too apathetic to take. action. Sitting around and talking is easy ? actually doing something takes effort and time. Student Government has decided to actually do something about closing Greene Street. Even though the semester is ending, the Student Government seems determined to get Greene closed before USC students return next fall. The Student-Trustee Liaison Committee of the USC Board of Trustees, who is charged with the responsibility, among other things, to consider matters of oersonal safety and welfare of USC students, has proposed a resolution, and authorized Ashley Abel, Student Government president, to present the resolution to Mayor Kirkman Finlay, and to members of the Columbia City Council at the next city council meeting. The committee wrote this resolution because it has become increasingly concerned about the safety of pedestrians in crossing Greene Street in the vicinity of Russell House. And they have just cause to be concerned ? that was proven when the USC student was struck a couple of weeks ago in the area that the Student-Trustee Liaison Committe mentioned. The resolution states that along with the student bodv of TTSf! (according to a recent random sample poll), and the university administration, they "endorse and support" the permanent closing of Greene Street. This is just the first step that the Student Government is taking in its goal to get Greene Street closed permanently. They hope to draw support from other groups as well, '1 | Tom Coyne, News Editor F Johnny Boggs, Sports Editor I John Vaughan, Entertainment Editor Beth Sundrla, Copydesk Chief j ' Chic/ Mike Fisher, Graphics Editpr Lezlie Wallace, Editorial Page Edit or r i Patty McCarthy. Student Government needs to draw support from is the student body. After all, the whole objective of closing the street is for the safety and protection of students. So far this year, students have proved that the accusation of students being apathetic and lazy, is justified. It doesn't involve other people ? it isn't something that is unaffective to students. Tuesday and Wednesday, April 27 and 28, Student Government representatives will be on Greene Street seeking students to sign petitions. Student Government is proving its genuine desire to get Greene Street closed. They are working hard to achieve this goal ? but they can't do it alone . They need the help of every student on the USC campus. Here is a chance for students to demonstrate their interest in the things which affect them.
