In a short story, if you don't know where you're going, you've got nothing." The themes of his stories are greed, love, lust, pride, obsession and the supernatural. One reviewer said Singer was a moralist and believed that goodness was the natural condition of man; this was why Singer's characters were often led astray by evil spirits because at heart they were good and it took an octside force to corrupt them. Singer disagrees. "I believe the very opposite. I was brought up on the Old Testament and I believe man has to work all his life if he is to become good," he explained. Frequently, the main character in Singer's stories is an aging Yiddish writer much like himself. "Many of them are. All literature is autobiographical in some respects and this is a great truth. The person whom you know best is yourself," he said. Many of his stories are set in his native Poland in the ghettos of Warsaw and the surrounding areas. Singer said he was invited back to Poland but refused to go. "It's like the novel by Thomas Wolfe, You Can't Go Home Again. After 40 years, it wouldn't be the same Poland I remember."
