Haines, Advertising Mar Jean Hatchell, Business Manag Mark McEwan, Production Manai Forgottei This past Thursday, USC awarded outstanding students various awards based on their accomplishments at USC. Feeling that several students were overlooked, we would like to recognize serveral students and faculty members who we think deserve awards for various reasons. The first award goes to John Routh, better known as Cocky. Cocky has displayed enthusiasm at every game he has attended, and has added a lot to the USC athletic department. The athletic department recognized Routh's value and VlOO 111 rnH Vli m o p o full fimn nuo mi vu iiini ao a i un nine employ ee to play the part of Cocky and deal with other aspects of public relations for the department. USC should feel lucky to have Cocky at our school. Not only loved by Carolina fans of all ages, he is a favorite of opposing fans and players well. Cocky receives the "Most Valuable Member of the Athletic Department" award. The next student deserving an award for significant contributions to USC is Barry Gray. Gray chaired the Senate Finance uummiittje, anu uiu a commendable job. He also ran for Student Government VicePresident, and lost by a very narrow margin. Here is a case where a very qualified candidate lost. Hopefully he will run for Student Government office again next year, and hopefully students will note his abilities and qualifications. Gray has been appointed Chief of Cf off V"\x 7 u tu jl i kjj uiuuciti uruvciiiiuciii President Ashley Abel. This is a very good appointment by Abel. Gray will do a fine job. Gray receives the "Concientious Worker'' award for his work in Student Government. He is a friendly, and personable member of the USC administration. Beckham receives the 4'Big Guy" award, for being the eyes and, ears for the big guy, President Holderman. Another award goes out to Terry Kelly, newly appointed womens1 basketball coach. Kelly undertook coaching a team in mid-season which was in the midst of controvery and nationwide ridicule. He kept the team respectable, and finished the season with a winning note. Kelly receives the award for "Undertaking the Most Un desirable Job." Now for the real awards. Since the year is almost at its end, we would like to recapture the year by recognizing people who have been in the news, and have contributed, whether good or bad, to life at USC. Mayor Kirkman Finlay receives an award for not closing Greene Street. It would make life too dull for USC students. We appreciate his concern for us. We would also like to recognized Southern Bell, for being kind _L. X _ 1 _ P 1 euougn to proviue iree long distance telephone service on the campus phones. It is nice to see local businesses show such consideration for USC students. Speaking of local businesses, another organization is always ready to help struggling USC students? the Columbia Police Department, rney are always available to give tickets, often as soon as the meter expires, and they are quick to tow cars, regardless of notes telling stories of car trouble, or gas failure ; these brave men are not taken in by any sod stories, true or not. After all, what's $20 to college students. Finally, we would like to commend the Intramural Department for putting the Gamecock's Co-Rec Softball team in a men's league. Since that completely eliminates us from the polls we can't be accused of being baised. Hopefully no one has been neglected. If we did forget someone, we hope they don't feel badly.
