"These kids spend an average of five hours per day working on the show," said Susan Earle, the 5-foot2-inch, 95-pound bundle of nervous energy who is choreographing the production. Earle, 33, who teaches all the ballet classes at USC, in addition to her duties as artistic director for the dance company, has worked on "Sylvia" every night since Feb. 1. Earle and stage manager Duke Spinelli, a USC junior, are faced with the difficult task of maintaining order. during rehearsals that jometimes resemble a threering circus. I use headphones to communicate with the technicians, and I call for all the changes in lighting, scenerv anH mi>Qir? Wo all got together for about eight hours one day to figure out the timing on the cues. These people know me and know how I think; otherwise it would be impossible." The props and scenery are one of the reasons why Earle chose "Sylvia" for the company to perform. "I knew 'Sylvjka' would be exciting," she said. "There are statues, beautiful costumes and even a collapsing cave. We needed eight people just to build the costumes ? there are 55 costumes and they are built by hand." Hardly any of them rnnlH rtanpp u/hpn fhou came here. Now they're so competitive; they train like athletes. We even have people transferring from other schools now just to be in this dance company." Earle, who danced professionally with the Los Angeles Dance Theater before coming to USC in 1973, said choreography is a special talent. "Just because someone is a good football player doesn't mean they will make a good coach. To be a choreographer requires a good ear for music, a vivid imaoinaiinn anH o willingness to experiment." "Sylvia" will run from April 22-25. All performances will be at 8 p.m. except for the 3 p.m. Sunday matinee. Ticket information is available by calling 7772551.
