GAMECOC Founded 190b Fletcher Johnson, Acting Editor-i Jerry Brewer, General Manag Linda S. Haines, Advertising Mi Jean Hatchell, Business Mana Mark McEwan, Production Mane Guide Ne< Last week, the Student Government distributed a Courre Guide to USC students. This has been a project which the Student Government has planned and worked on for quite a while. While they should be commended for the effort and idea, there are some problems with the Course Guide. The questions asked of students in the surveys for the guide need to remain objective. Some of the questions appeared to be rather subjective instead. Questions like "hours of homework per week," "the pace of the course," and "exams questions are clear" require individual answers and could vary from one student to another. Other questions displayed in the flmirCO rtliirlo urill ^ uv/ \j uiuv will CCHV^Il LI1C dl" tention of lazy students who only want to enroll in "crip" courses. The "required workload" and the "hours of homework per week" would attract students who want to take courses with little work, not students who want to look at the guide to find interesting professors from whom they could learn. Some credit has to be given to the good questions, the questions which remain objective and tell the students who are contemplating enrolling in a course the facts which should help them determine who to take? for the right reasons. Questions like "good exam material coverage," fair and justified grading," "does the professor speak clearly," "number of required papers," and "number ftf f f C1 ffi t fAir? - 1 A - ** v/1 tvoio given, cliiU LI1C lUlcU COSt 01 required textbooks," are all good questions, and good points for students to know before they enroll in a class. These are the items which let the student know what to expect from a class. One of the biggest faults with the Course Guide is the lack of participation. 280 courses were listed in the Course Guide. Some colleges F only one course? German. . w .. m ok (J)oton . . . General Studies gave the best turnout with 23 courses listed, followed closely by the English and Philosophy Departments with 21. According to John Bos well, exStudent Government nresident in his introduction of the Course Guide, only 15-20 percent of the courses at USC are included. In order to be effective, the Course Guide needs the cooperation of every professor at USC. With so few entries in the Course Guide, it is hardly helpful in aiding students to compare courses. As a matter of fact, in many cases, only one teacher per course is given. The Course Guide should be pfimnlpto urifh oil nAllffAO w*?t/>vvv it i tn ujli \^vui oca willUl will be taught the semester after the Guide comes out. This would indeed help students who don't want to wak into a course blindly, who would rather know what the professor expects from the students in a class, and wants to know if he will gain anything from the course. The guide must have the rest of the courses included, else it is practically useless. Another area which may need revision is the manner in which the top portion of the Questions are answered? Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree. The question? Does the professor speak understandably?? answer ? neutral? A better way to answer these questions would be to answer simply yes or no. Not only would that save space, but would be easier to read and comprehend. This was thp first or 4rial for the Course Guide. It is a good idea, and hopefully it will continue, and improve each year. Students should also use the guide in a proper perspective? not to find easy courses, but to find courses that interest them and courses that they will benefit from. f? ?
