The game was not without its fireworks as Carolina Head Coach June Raines was angered by several questionable calls made by the umpires. One in particular occurred in the eighth when Fox drilled a ball past first base which the home plate umpire called foul. While everybody else basked in the sun on I the beaches of Florida or set up jobs for the ! | summer, USC traveled to the University of I Miami (Fla.) for a four-game series with I the Hurricanes. The Gamecocks were 9-0 | when they headed south. They came back i with a 9-4 mark. ? USC will get a chance to avenge those I % losses beginning tonight when the 25-7 [ | Gamecocks host the 35-11 Hurricanes. I Miami, ranked 16th in the latest collegiate f baseball poll, were on a hot streak when |? USC came to town, according to Head Coach Ron Fraser. . "We caught them at a good time," Fraser said Tuesday. "We were due: we had been ? on a losing streak." The Hurricanes outscored USC by a margin of 18-11. Fraser admits that it's unlikely that his Hurricanes will sweep the H Gamecocks but wouldn't mind doing it H again. m "Of course not," Fraser chuckled. "We ! caught them at the right time. But we've had our problems." The only two returning starters for Miami are shortstop Billy Wrona and second baseman Mitch Seone. Fraser expects to go with righthander Mike Kasprzak, a 6-2 senior with an 8-1 mark and a 2.90 ERA in the opener tonight. In Thursday's game, it will probably be senior righthander Sam Sorce, who is 5-4 with a 3.21 ERA. Freshman righty Rob Souza, 5-2 with a 5.32 ERA, should start Friday's game while Saturday's starter is still unnamed. First baseman Steve Lusby leads the Hurricanes with a .403 batting average while outfielder Calvin James follows at .352. Third baseman Phil Lane is the top Miami longoail hitter with 13 home runs and 43 RBI. $ >fe> .. % % I ~ ..r'3 I :.;.... .. . _. . ... . . : ; > .. . * .* >:: .. .v.. {.:< ; >:**><: : . : " ' ; > * ... ; Staff Photo by JOHNNY BOGGS into third as Tiger third baseman he bag.
