Equestrian ( By KATHY LEWIS Guett Writer Twelve members of the USD Enupstrian ninh vf?ntnroH Gold Haven Ranch recently for trail rides, but the club is suffering from financial problems. For the first ride, the group tried out a newly "broken" trail and then returned and relaxed as they cooked hamburgers and hotdogs over an open grill. After eating, the group went out on the last ride of the day with several of the more advanced riders taking a separate trail to trot and canter. After returning to the stable, most riders were grateful to dismount and head for home. "The main problem is lack of horses and funding," club president Angela Henderson said. She, and other club members, feel this problem could be solved in two ways. The first way would be to obtain money through Student Government to lease horses that all members could ride, but it- * _ * * - mis idea cannot work because of lack of funds. The second possibility would be to request a special rate a local rental barns, such as Gold Haven Ranch or the new Horse Pen Creek Farms. However, these barns are both over a half-hour drive from Columbia. "In the past, we had a rate of $5 per half-day at Windchime Farms," advisor Charles Gay said. A recently proposed way to raise money for the club was a cross-country course at Bell Camp. By holding three-day * events and shows there, the club hoped to raise money to lease horses from local blacksmith Dave Smith. However, Bell Camp vetoed the course, reasoning that nearby Wildewood Farms would also take advantage of the course without permission. For the future, the club has an agreement with Horse Pen Creek Farms for a special horse rental rate. They have adapted their $5 per hour rate to $7.50 per two hours.
